Presenter Profile: Kobus Van Der Wath

Kobus has extensive international experience in financial services and management / strategy consulting and has worked in Asia, Europe and Africa. During his banking and consulting career his functional background included strategy / planning and new business development; business management; project management; e-banking; and investment strategy and research.

As a management consultant with The Boston Consulting Group in Singapore, he worked with clients on Financial Services and Energy projects (in Asia and the Middle East) and he participated in Insurance, E-Commerce, CRM and Airline / Alliance studies (across Asia).

Previous to BCG, his banking career included senior management experience gained with Standard Chartered Bank Plc in London and Asia; and Standard Merchant Bank and the South African Reserve Bank, in South Africa. His last role with Standard Chartered Bank was Global Markets E-Business Development Manager for Asia; and prior to that he was Head of Investment Strategy and Research for Asia. He has also worked as an Investment Strategist and an Economist based in London and South Africa respectively.

Kobus now has his own consulting group focused on creating a bridge between China and Africa.  The group has offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, London and Johannesburg and has developed extensive experience in supporting South African Mining, Industrial and Engineering companies in successfully conducting business with China.  Kobus’ Consulting Team currently works with companies such as Anglo American and Bateman Technologies in implementing their China Strategies.

China continues to play an ever-increasing role in the global economy and environment; from pollution to human rights issues, from raw material production to manufacturing to consumption; one cannot ignore the effect China’s emergence has had on the world. However, what does this really mean? Is it a threat or an opportunity? Is it to be treated with skepticism or received with open arms?

We start by looking at some of these questions from a broader, global, perspective; then narrow down by looking at what this means for Australia. We examine the key risks and opportunities and develop high level strategies to manage these opportunities and risks; as well as continuing to outline a few case studies, practical issues and steps that can assist one in turning China into a viable business partner.
